
Why does my skin tone change the treatment plan for a laser?

Laser and light devices work by seeking a target called a chromophore. Depending on the treatment, that target may be pigment, blood, water, or a hair follicle. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin and hair their color. Skin with more melanin can absorb more of certain types of light, including energy that was meant for a spot or hair follicle.
That does not mean patients with brown or Black skin cannot have laser treatments. It means device choice, wavelength, settings, cooling, preparation, and provider experience matter. Aggressive treatment can raise the chance of burns or changes in skin color, including post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or, less commonly, loss of pigment.
A careful provider may recommend a lower treatment density, a different wavelength, a test spot, skin preparation, or a series of measured treatments. That is not undertreating you. It is adjusting the plan to your biology.
